Transparent PNG or white-background JPG? Choosing the right file
After removing a background you usually have two options: save the item on a solid background (most often white) as a JPG, or save it with a transparent background as a PNG. They look the same in an editor but behave differently once uploaded. This guide explains the difference and which to use where.
The short answer
| Use | Recommended file | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Main photo for a marketplace or flea-market listing | JPG on a white (or light) background | Widely accepted, smaller files, looks the same everywhere |
| Your own designs: banners, social posts, shop themes with colored backgrounds | Transparent PNG | You can place the item on any background later |
| A master copy to keep | Transparent PNG | You can make new white, gray or colored versions without cutting the item out again |
Always check the current photo rules of the marketplace you sell on. Accepted formats, sizes and background rules differ between sites and change over time.
What "transparent" means
Every pixel in an image has a color. PNG and WebP images can also store how see-through each pixel is (called an alpha channel). That is what lets the area around a cut-out item be empty instead of white.
JPG has no transparency. When an image with transparent areas is saved as JPG, those areas have to be filled with a solid color. In pikunelo, you choose that color as the background (white, light gray, black or a custom color) before you download.
Why white JPG is usually safer for listings
- Predictable display. A white background looks white on every site and app.
- Smaller files. JPG compresses photos well, which helps with upload limits and slow connections.
- Broad support. Practically every marketplace, messaging app and phone gallery accepts JPG.
If a marketplace wants a white background, export a white version rather than uploading a transparent image and hoping the site fills it with white.
What can go wrong with transparent images
- The background may not be what you expect. Depending on the site or app, transparent areas can be shown as white, black, gray or a checkerboard, or the site may convert the image itself. Check the preview after uploading.
- Edges show up on dark backgrounds. A cutout made from a photo on a white background can have a faint light outline that becomes visible on dark backgrounds. See AI or no AI: getting clean edges.
- Larger files. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so photo-like PNG files are usually much larger than JPGs of the same image.
JPG quality and re-saving
JPG saves space by discarding detail that is hard to see. Each time a JPG is edited and saved again as JPG, a little more detail can be lost. To avoid this:
- Keep your original photos and, if you made one, the transparent PNG master.
- Make each JPG fresh from the original or the PNG master instead of editing the last JPG again.
- In pikunelo, the JPG / WebP quality slider controls this trade-off between file size and detail.
What about WebP?
WebP supports both transparency and efficient compression, and modern browsers display it. Some marketplaces, older apps or desktop programs may not accept WebP uploads, though. Use WebP if you know the place you upload to accepts it; otherwise JPG and PNG are the safer choices. pikunelo notes that some browsers may not support every export format.
File size limits
If a site has a maximum file size, pikunelo's Compress option can aim for a target size in KB by adjusting quality and dimensions. Very small targets may not be reachable without visible quality loss, so check the result.
Size and shape
Many listing pages display square images, so a square image with the item centered and an even margin is a common choice. pikunelo offers common square sizes such as 1080 × 1080 and 1200 × 1200 as starting points. These are common dimensions, not a statement of any marketplace's current requirements.
A simple workflow
- Cut out the item once and download the transparent PNG as your master.
- Download a white-background JPG for your listing.
- Need more? pikunelo's background variations ZIP gives you white, light gray, warm beige and transparent versions at once.
- Keep the original photo too, in case you want to redo the cutout later.
